Professor Gegenfurtner’s career in colour vision began with doctoral studies at New York University under the supervision of George Sperling and John Krauskopf, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at NYU with Anthony Movshon, and then by appointments at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, Tübingen and Otto-von- Guericke University, Magdeburg. He took up his present position as Professor of Psychology at the Justus-Liebig-University Giessen in 2001. His research contributions have ranged from low-level chromatic adaptation and discrimination, through colour constancy and higherlevel cortical mechanisms, all the way to cognitive aspects such as colour memory, colour categorization, and colour in scene and object recognition. His work is centred on psychophysics, but he has embraced methodological innovations, using the power of deep neural networks and the immersive capabilities of virtual reality. His influential review articles have brought developments in colour vision to the larger community, and his laboratory in Giessen has provided a welcoming and productive environment for colour vision scientists from across the world. |

The next ICVS summer school will run from Monday 11th August to Friday 15th August 2025, with students arriving on Sunday 10th. As in previous years, it will take place at Pembroke College, Oxford, UK. We will post further details soon. In the meantime, please put these dates in your diary.
Dear Andre, Barry and Jay
We missed you in Ljubljana. We recorded a very amateurish video to say 'hi' from the business meeting. It started recording just as John was talking about you, Andre, and how this is the first IRGCVD/ICVS that you have not attended. And, Barry and Jay, we wanted to send you both our best too. We hope all three of you are now in better health.
Although this is on the website, it is only visible to people I've sent the link to (i.e. the 3 of you). It was too big to email! You'll need to download it so right click on the link below and use "save as" or whatever the Apple equivalent is! Email me (
With best wishes.

I understand from them that, due to local bank issues, one or two American and Japanese delegates may still encounter credit card issues. Do please go ahead and complete your registration ASAP.
